In this guide
Thailand has three main seasons, but the weather varies by region: the Gulf islands follow a different pattern to Phuket and Krabi. Here's when to go where.
Thailand's three seasons
- Cool and dry (November to February): pleasant temperatures, sunny skies and calm Andaman seas. Peak season, with higher prices around Christmas and New Year.
- Hot (March to May): temperatures often reach the mid to high 30s °C, especially in Bangkok and the north. Good beach weather, with April's Songkran festival.
- Rainy (June to October): monsoon rains, often in heavy afternoon showers. Lush landscapes, fewer tourists and lower prices.
Best time by region
| Region | Best months | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bangkok and central | November–February | Hot March–May; rainy June–October |
| Chiang Mai and north | November–February | Smoky air possible March–April |
| Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi (Andaman) | November–April | Monsoon May–October, rough seas |
| Koh Samui, Phangan, Tao (Gulf) | January–August | Heaviest rain October–December |
Festivals worth planning around
- Songkran (13–15 April): nationwide water fights and temple visits for Thai New Year.
- Loy Krathong and Yi Peng (around the November full moon): floating offerings on rivers and, in Chiang Mai, sky lanterns.
- Full Moon Party: monthly on Koh Phangan.
- Chinese New Year: celebrations in Bangkok's Chinatown, usually January or February.
Cheapest time to visit
The rainy season, roughly May to October (excluding July–August holiday weeks), usually has the lowest hotel prices. Flights follow demand too: fares tend to rise for the December–January peak and school holidays in your home country. Read our cheapest time to fly to Thailand.

Packing for the season
Bring light, breathable clothes all year, plus a light jacket for air-conditioned buses and the cooler northern mountains in December and January. In the rainy season, pack a compact umbrella, quick-dry clothes and sandals. Always bring clothes that cover shoulders and knees for temples.
