Phuket and Krabi sit on opposite sides of Phang Nga Bay on Thailand's Andaman coast. Both have turquoise water and limestone islands, but they feel very different. Here's how to choose.

Phuket: choice and convenience
Thailand's largest island has an international airport with direct flights from many countries, and a wide range of beaches:
- Patong for nightlife and Bangla Road.
- Kata and Karon for families, with good swimming and restaurants.
- Kamala and Surin for a quieter, upmarket stay.
- Phuket Old Town for colourful Sino-Portuguese shophouses, cafés and a Sunday walking street market.
Day trips include Phang Nga Bay (James Bond Island), Koh Phi Phi and, in season, the Similan Islands for world-class diving.
Krabi: limestone cliffs and calm
Krabi province is about scenery. Most visitors stay in Ao Nang and take long-tail boats to:
- Railay, a peninsula reachable only by boat, with cliffs, rock climbing and Phra Nang Cave Beach.
- The Four Islands and Hong Islands for snorkelling and sandbars.
- Koh Lanta, a laid-back island for longer stays.
Evenings are quieter, and hotels are often slightly cheaper than equivalent places in Phuket.
Families, couples and budgets
- Families: Phuket's Kata and Karon have more family resorts and activities; Krabi works well for older kids who like boat trips.
- Couples: Krabi and the quieter west coast of Phuket are romantic choices.
- Budget travellers: Krabi's Ao Nang and Koh Lanta usually offer better value.
Getting there
Phuket International Airport (HKT) has the most international and domestic routes. Krabi International Airport (KBV) has frequent domestic flights from Bangkok and some international links. Always compare both airports: fares can differ a lot.
Our verdict
Choose Phuket for convenience, choice and nightlife; choose Krabi for scenery and a slower pace. With a week or more, do both, travelling via Koh Phi Phi.
